Hungry Black Bear Spotted in Monrovia, California, Wanders Neighborhood Friday Morning Looking for a Snack Near Los Angeles Homes

Weird News Article

MONROVIA, CA — A black bear was seen wandering around Monrovia on Friday morning, apparently searching for a snack. The brief FOX Local Los Angeles clip showed the animal moving through the neighborhood near homes in the San Gabriel Valley.

The sighting added an unexpected bit of wildlife drama to a typical morning in the foothills east of Los Angeles. Black bears do live in parts of Southern California, but they are still a striking sight when they turn up in a residential area.

How the bear encounter unfolded

The video from FOX Local Los Angeles showed the bear on the move rather than lingering in one place. It was described as hungry, and the bear appeared to be looking for food while passing through Monrovia.

That kind of visit can happen when wild animals drift closer to neighborhoods in search of easy calories. In suburban foothill communities, bear sightings are unusual enough to grab attention, but not unheard of. Residents are often reminded to keep trash secured and avoid leaving food outdoors, since simple temptations can draw wildlife into human spaces.

The clip itself was short, lasting just 16 seconds, but it captured the moment clearly enough for viewers to recognize the animal and the setting right away.

Why bear sightings grab attention

Monrovia sits near open space and mountain habitat, which helps explain why a black bear might make an appearance there. As Southern California neighborhoods continue to press up against wild areas, occasional bear wanderings can become part of local life.

For many people, the appeal of a sighting is simple: it is a rare chance to see a large wild animal so close to city streets. At the same time, wildlife officials typically urge people to give bears room and not try to approach or feed them. A bear that is only passing through can still become a problem if it finds an easy meal.

A familiar Southern California reminder

This kind of encounter also serves as a reminder that the line between urban and wild space is thin in much of the Los Angeles area. Communities near canyons and foothills often share the landscape with coyotes, deer, and sometimes bears.

When one shows up, the reaction is usually equal parts surprise and curiosity. A bear strolling through town may last only a few moments on camera, but it tends to stick in the memory far longer than the average morning commute.
